‘Legislators Give Affordable Housing a Boost’

By James D. York, P.A.

Realtors and potential homeowners alike are rejoicing in recent decisions put in place by Florida legislators during the 60-day sessions that ended in May. New legislation will ensure that over $270 million is used toward affordable housing projects around the state--the highest level of funding in a decade.

The affordable housing funds are slated to provide down payment assistance for buyers who meet income criteria, with the money coming partly from state and local government trust funds ($137 million), and partly from the Florida Housing Guarantee Fund ($113 million). An additional $22 million is earmarked for various housing projects to assist homeless individuals, veterans, and persons with disabilities by offering rental assistance and housing rehabilitation services.

Maria Wells, Florida Realtors president, told realtors throughout the state after sessions ended, "During committee weeks and session, you made your voices heard in the public policy process, making the difference for Realtors to celebrate a victorious year on our key issues in Tallahassee. Thank you Gov. Scott, members of the Legislature and our incredible Tallahassee staff for listening to our concerns and turning our feedback into action."

Just give us a call with your questions and concerns about how this legislation might affect you.
