‘Do You Talk to Your Oven?’

If you haven’t yet jumped on the voice-control bandwagon to talk to your home appliances, you might want to wait a bit and join the next wave of the future: texting them instead.

According to Toby Ruckert, CEO of Unified Inbox, many appliance manufacturers are enabling text messaging these days. His company is offering a service to handle the human-appliance communication, which can control ovens, electric pots, toasters, garage door openers, and window blinds, among others. For example, imagine texting from work, “TURN ON OVEN 350 @ 6:00 PM,” “OPEN LIVING ROOM BLINDS,” or “CLOSE GARAGE DOOR.” The possibilities really are endless.  "Think of it as a universal translator between the languages that machines speak … and us humans," Ruckert says.

Several systems are in the works. “Jarvis,” devised by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg to interact with his home appliances and electronics via voice, is being modified to also accept texting, which some people feel is more private and non-intrusive to others around them than voice commands.

Jason Jameson of IBM reports that they are working on a common interface, so the same smartphone messaging app will work with all appliances and other devices for text messaging. You may want to explore the available options when you go shopping—you just never know when you might want to text your lawn sprinkler.
